march 20
Hey all I went up to UNF last night. This weekend was designated the march work weekend. The winter months are limited to 10 trucks on the trails per work weekend to go directly to a work site for prior planned trail maintenance and return. I spent today with a small group of 5 trucks 13 people. I rode with some one else my Jeep stayed home. Our point this weekend was to make sure all of the trails were passable, and free of blow down trees. Between us we rode all of the trails except one. Which was Dickey Bell. That will be rode tomorrow. I spent the morning with Bruce a man that has been wheeling Uwharrie since the 60’s. and the head ranger over UNF Leigh Marston. We discussed the ATV by pass on Daniel. Blazing that with red engineer tape will be our main project on Sunday morning April 18th Bruce if you could be there for that I’d really appreciate your opinion on that. Then this evening there was a meeting of the URA at eldorado with the rangers I attended this. The big topic of this was the trail passes and getting the information out to people. The passes will be $30 and available at several local stores. We should in my opinion get ours at the outpost because that is where we do business and the owner Chris really does a good job of supporting the Forrest. The pass can be used in/on multiple vehicles as long as the original purchaser is riding in/on that vehicle. But the pass must be prominently displayed in/on that vehicle. Also FYI the Forrest service originally wanted to charge $30 per vehicle per year. After numerous complaints they decided to give the multiple vehicle pass a chance. If we mess it up it will revert back to $30 a vehicle per year. SO we will make or break that. Personally I feel like the pass is a decent deal and is good for the Forrest. There will be no more pay at the gates. The rangers are asking for volunteers to help notify the people entering the Forrest of the new pass system and hand out flyers. If you can help them call or notify Janet (910-572-4858) or Leigh Marston (910-576-6391) Trail maintenance was discussed a lot. We are in decent shape. And I think our projects for the next few months will be the ATV bypass. I did say we would also take over the parts of rocky mountain loop east of 553. Which isn’t really a lot. But there is one camping area near the intersection of rocky mountain loop and Daniel that can be a mess. The next thing was safety. Their regulations state that there must be one person certified in basic first aide/CPR per group. Or one per augur if we are fencing. We do not have a problem with this. Most of us are CPR certified. I might at some point need a photocopy of your CPR cert. card. Also I need to talk to Brian, Rueben, Joe S, (if your monitoring) and possibly Bruce and Mark offline about a problem that the rangers are having that you may have the solution to call me or email me. I think this was the gist of the meeting. It is exciting to me. Almost all of the trails are adopted. There is a mountain biking group helping out. An Atv club and the horse riders are getting with the program. Also the Rangers are beginning to pay attention to us. Also I saw 3 people issued 3 citations apiece for being on the trails in a truck with Beer. I've been told the rangers will enforce the no alchol policy this summer. The work weekend April 17th & 18th is going to be very busy with Zuwharrie present. They will have 200 plus rigs on the trails. We have been asked not to block the trail off. So Saturday we will do our usually trash pick up at 8am in the morning. Then Sunday just a few of us will blaze the ATV by pass. I am trying to get us a couple of sites at arrowhead for the weekend. But we will be paying. I know that isn’t a big deal. I think that’s it. If you’ve got any questions please let me know.
