diet and genetics I just wanted to add a little rant type post. Its very discouraging when i talk to a really big guy at the gym and ask what their diet is, and it turns out i eat 1500 more clories a day than them but weigh 80 pounds less!! I'm not skinny , but im not huge. Im fit. I've been trying to pack on just like 15-20 more pounds for like 5 years now and it drives me nuts. I gain but its fat. I can lose 10 pounds in a week and a half. My metabolism burns calories before i even eat them i think! Obviously, ill grow if i eat more, but i honestly hate eating like 5-6 meals a day plus my stomach gets big. I eat 3 and try to get 2 shakes in. If i dont grow, i blame my genetics. My wrists and ankles are small so i heard that means you cant really gain too much. That stinks cause i have been trying so hard to get big enough to look the way i want. People say " eat 4 chicken breasts an rice a day" I did that. I felt like crap and i got fatter. I stopped and i lost the wieght in like 2 weeks. anyway, i feel a little better after writing this. Anyone else know what i mean? |

diet and genetics
Since I have a weight problem, I can't commisurate with you, but I work out with a couple of guys who are slim and hard gainers and they have had some success - and what they've said I've seen in my readings, but you're not going to like the answer. You've got to eat even more protein than the rest of us. Like 2 grams per pound of bodyweight. This with lots of good quality carbs (no processed sugar, breads, cakes, or cookies) - things like potatoes, brown rice, yams, etc. (500-600 grams per day). Eat a good meal hi in protein and carbs ESPECIALLY right after a grueling workout. Eat the right carbs and you shouldn't get fat.
As far as workouts, they need to be Gruelling - like failing on the third set of ten using intensity that - well afterwards you have spots in front of your eyes, or want to puke. A training partner is really helpful in acheiving this. Also, a good 19-Nor Andro DIOL (400 mgs per day)is a good idea (read that as necessity) and/or one of the new 1AD products like Biotest Mag 10. |

Diet and genetics Additional suggestion: Some of my reading suggests that ectomorphs (hard gainers) may have higher levels of cortisol - the hormone that down regulates muscle growth. (Cortisol production is STIMULATED by strenuous workouts by the way.) In addition to my first reply - try taking an anti-cortisol supplement like "Cort-Bloc" from Home Gym Warehouse, or "Phosphatidylserine" available through ProSource. This should help block that catabolic action of cortisol, allowing larger muscle growth. |

geeze how often do you work out? If you're looking to gain, don't work out more than 3 times a week and cut out aerobic workouts.. And just because you eat more calories than someone doesn't mean you will gain more muscle mass. Where are those calories coming from? sugar? fats? proteins? There's no magic formula. Find the combo that works for you and go with it. However, don't let your body get used to a particular pattern. Change it ever now and then. Edited by: roadblock at: 7/13/02 3:08:01 pm |

Re: diet and genetics I disagree here big time. potatoes, yams, rice will make you fat as a pig, if you are prone to gaining fat. but if you can't gain weight, nothing will make you fat. More than likely your workout needs to be modifieds. screw that 3 set bullcrap. Something diff here. When your start lifting the workout is more important than nutrition. then later on nutrition is the key , big time. But, after awhile it goes back to the workout, this is something people don't understand. |

Re: geeze how often do you work out? Why not working out everyday but different parts in order to have same muscle group work every two days like you suggest? |

Re: geeze how often do you work out? even when you work out different muscle groups, you're still using other muscles. You pretty much use your forearms whether you're doing bis or tris or other stuff in order to just hold the weight. You use your back even when you're working your chest doing bench presses. Also, your muscles aren't the only organs in your body that need recovery time. Your liver & kidneys need time to recover as well. (creatine is nasty on your kidneys - the micro-creatine is slightly better). So if you're trying to get bigger, you need to find the right amount of rest inbetween workouts that lets you progressively lift more weight. If you work 4-5 days a week and the following week, or the week after that, you aren't doing it easier, or your muscles are too tired for you to increase weight, it's probably time to do fewer days a week in order to give your body more time to recover. |
