Hi Fellow Kai Fans,
I'm almost finished stuffing it, then I'll be sewing the sides together as well as the loose hairs I couldn't get to; afterwards, I'll do part 2 of my wig, which is using a braider to braid 3 sides of the wig, then sew the ends together, then sew it on top of the 1st part of the bun & also sew the bangs along with it. Then sew the middle ends together, sewing 1 side down, then stuff it & sew the other end down; afterwards, I'll be ready for part 3 of my wig, which is brading it. I'm taking pictures of it as I go along, so when I write the article & put it on my web site, others can give it a try. I'll keep you informed on my progress & can't wait to wear it at next yr's Dragon*Con.

It sounds like very intricate work, I can't wait to see your progress. Just putting that Kai bun together must have been a pain for the makeup people.

I can imagine it was for them, but Michael sure looked great wearing the wig.
It's work, but I can already see the results starting to appear; I'll keep you informed of my wig progress.

New here, but figured this was a good topic to start at.
Am I really the only person in the world who actually likes his bun?!!
........Even tried it myself a few times, the most time I ever spent trying to do anything with my hair.
Of the bun changing. It did gradually get smaller in the seasons (didn't know about the color change thanx). Personally I think it looked best in season 2, nice, perfectly round, an architect's and drooler's dream...... You could swear they had a mathematician design it!
Although when I first saw him, even in the movies, I thought DUDE This guy's awesome!!!! And the line "Who would you like me to kill" set me over the top.
Then I find out the actor is 41 (as opposed to my 17 at the time). Damn. Dreams dashed. He's old compared to me. Sortof stuff.
How the hell did he age so beautifully?:

Hi HDA.....welcome aboard!
MM is 41 now, but when he first started filming Lexx the movies he must have been in his mid 30's, I'd guess around 34?
I love his bun! I too prefer the bigger bun from the movies and season 2. By the time it got to season 4 there wasn't much bun left and I didn't really like it very much....I think it made him look a bit harsher.
That man is so beautiful, like a fine wine, he ages well.

He was probably in his mid-30's when he started his role of Kai & aged well during all 4 seasons; now that he's 41 & I'm 39 yrs old, we're probably called middle-aged.

I'm in agreement with you there, making making 1 is challenging, but fun to try & do; I'm using a picture of both Michael McManus & Wade (HDS) of how to go about doing it & I think it's close to what MM wore. I can tell you 1 thing, only the bun was a wig, his braided hair was his own.
I'm just about finished stuffing it & am getting ready to sew it; then I'll use my braider & braid 3 sides of the wig, then sew the ends together, fold it over & sew it onto the 1st bun (stuffed), including the bangs, then sew the middle ends together, sew 1 side down, stuff it & sew the other side down. After I've made the bun, I'll braid the rest of the hair & I'll have something similiar to what Michael wore on Lexx. I'll keep you informed on my wig's progress as well as the rest of my Keyeo costume.

Alright Keyeo you're scaring me now...all this talk about costumes and wigs...you peeps really need a hobby! LOL Dang..woman...you ever think of taking up painting or maybe drinking? Sounds like it would be way more fun than sitting their sewing up a rug rat cover...

Yes, but if she took up drinking then she would end up posting silly nonsense as I do in the wee hours (and often to the wrong board), and then I would lose my title....
I often wonder why the never made an episode with Kai's hair completely down..that would have been enough to sustain my dirty mind at least until 2034...

Yeah, but in wake the dead, Leonesa it looked like a fake ratty wig, the most live his hair looked ever was when he was playing actor Kai in fluffdaddy and that's because it was his own hair. The wig never looked very real in the early seasons.

It didn't look so bad MMlover...there's a shot of him with it swinging around his face..bit of a wave to it..I thought he looked quite dashing..except for that mad look to his face! LOL! I do other crafts besides creating my wig; I just thought I'd give it a try & see if I come close to it. Also, even if it didn't come close, at least I gave it a good try. I don't do much drinking & besides, trying to create a wig similiar to Kai's is quite challenging.
Michael wore a bufont wig most of the time & if you had noticed, the bun changed in each season; in `Wake The Dead' the was a wig that was done to make him look psyco, the others from other episodes also changed over time.

Hi Fellow Kai Fans,
I've just finished the 1st part this afternoon &took more pictures of it; now I'm ready for part 2, which is using my braider & will be braiding 3 sides of the wig, then sew the ends together, then tuck it under the 1st bun (now stuffed & sewn) & sew it with the bangs. Then I'll sew the braids together & sew 1 side down; I'll decide whether or not to stuff it again, before sewing the otherside down. Then I'll do part 3, which is braid the remaining hairs together.
When I start doing part 2 of creating a Brunnen-G wig, I'll also be sew loose hairs to cover up the part that's stuffed, so the stuffing won't show when I wear it. I'll definitely keep you informed of my progress & be telling you more about the other part of my costume as soon as I get to it; I'll definitely be taking pictures of it, so you can try making something similiar yourself.

thanks for keeping us updated. but it must of been hard to find the right material for the costume. (I dont know about you but were i live you have to travel about 45min to get decent fabric) wht are you using underneith for the pants and on top. i would reall be most interested in the shirt when you do it cause it has a lot f detail in it. well good luck and happy sewing

I've finished braiding 3 sides of the wig & took a picture of it; I'll be bringing some of the hair up from 3 sides & sewing it, covering up the stuffing, so the stuffing won't be shown; then, I'll sew the braided part to the bun & bangs, then sew the braids together & sew 1 side down. I'll then decide whether or not I need to stuff it some more; then I'll sew the other side down. Then I'll do the last part, which is braid the remaining part of the wig.

I'm making a similiar pant & shirt, but not exact; the pants has flowers on the bottom & I'll be adding some decoration that will look (hopefully) more like Kai's & the shirt/vest combo will also be decorated to be (hopefully) more like Kai's. I'll keep you informed on this part of my costume as soon as I can. I'll be wearing the usual underneath the shirt & pants.

Actualy the ep where he was rooling down the dune was at the end of 'K-Town' i re watched it and yes he was holding on to his wig as he was rolling down. I am surprized it stayed on with all the plumeting he did in s3.

Oh,that long hair fantasy !
When I had my hair down to my waist, I made a Brunnen G 'do' for Halloween one year (I had long black hair), and it was definitely a chore to get it all to stay up for the evening...
I had the braid in the back and somewhat of a small bun and several small braids hanging down in front of my face..wish i'd taken a pic of it at the time, but it was definitely a pain in the ass to do..
I congratulate anyone that can make it look acceptable..

Ya need some serious intrastructure (is that a word?) anyhoo..plenty of gel, plaster of paris, pins, teasing and more teasing and maybe just maybe the damn thing would have stayed up all night...*dang* I shoulda used that on my wedding night..maybe I wouldn't have had to stay up 1/2 the night coaxing that sucker! LOL

Hi Fellow Kai Fans,
An update on my wig; I've covered up the stuffing so it doesn't show; I then sewed it on & throughout places where I thought it showed. Next, I'll be taking a picture with it on; then sew the sewn-pigtailed part on top of the wig. I'll then sew the middle part together, then sew it down on both sides; I've already took a look at my wig & found that it doesn't need anymore stuffing. Afterwards, I'll take pictures of tha step; then go to the 4th & final step, which is braid the rest of the wig. I've been taking a break on that & working on my bluish shirt, which I've already done the back & am now doing the front; I've also been taking pictures of that.
I'll keep you all updated on my costume & let you know what I'm doing & how it's progressing.
