An Ending To Speaking Parts We Never Got To See...
I took a little time tonight and opened up my Speaking Parts book and it has a very long introduction with a lot of insight into the movie. Alot of comments by Atom Egoyan and one thing I found very interesting is that it doesn't tell us who the character Lance slept with, whether it was a man or a woman when he gigilo'd himself out to the hotel's clients. An excerpt from the script:
'Lance is buttoning up his shirt in one of the rooms. There is someone taking a shower in the washroom. A figure can be made out through the curtain, though it is impossible to tell if it is male or female. Lance leaves the room.'
HERE IS THE ENDING THAT WE NEVER GOT TO SEE THAT IS IN THE SCRIPT.......
The scenes which follow, although part of the original script were never shot.
Interior , Hotel, various locations, Day.
A quick montage of shots, each a glimpse of a particular gesture. No faces attached to the gestures. Hands sort soiled linen. Hands smooth sheets against a bed. Used towels are stuffed into a laundry bag. A bathtub is scrubbed, etc....
Lisa and Lance in her apartment, watching the television program that the Producer has made. The show looks exactly as it was seen in the previous shots.
Then there's some script dialog.......
On the television screen, the image cuts to a shot of a man rising from the audience. It is the Actor that has been hired to replace Lance. It is obvious from the way this man is shot that these inserts have been shot at a different time from the rest of the show.
More script dialog....
"Who are you?" The producer asks.
Actor: "I'm David's Brother."
Producer: "David's Brother?"
Actor: "yes."
the producer turns to the parents on the live feed image.
Producer: "Is this your son?"
The parents nod.
Actor: "I want to make a donation."
At this point in the original show, Clara appeared. but there is no trace of her as the image on the television cuts to a shot of the studio audience applauding. In this shot, taken from the original taping, Lance is spotted in the middle of the crowd of extras.
Lances mood suddenly changes as he stares at the shot of the audience applauding. He sees Clara. She is staring back at him. Lisa turns off the TV set.
Lisa: "It's just the stupid television."
Lance is still agitated. He turns to face Lisa. She moves to comfort him. As she runs her hand over his forehead, he closes his eyes.
Lisa: "I turned it off."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was the part that was never shot, excerpted from the book, Speaking Parts.
There was also a piece in there about how Arsinee who played Lisa, Atom Egoyan originally wanted to play Clara and the actress who played Clara to Play Lisa, but Arsinee really wanted to play the part of Lisa and she auditioned and got the part.
It's a good book with a very insightful look into the film, the director's thoughts and the script.
Well worth purchasing if you are an Atom Egoyan fan or a fan of the Movie or of MM.
Mine too, the book really explains alot about the movie. It's great! It's in the mail to you sexxy lexxy for you to read too! Have fun!
Re: An Ending To Speaking Parts We Never Got To See...
That ending really changes the depth of the movie. Not only is Lisa seeing extras from the movies who aren't really there, but so is Lance. And Lisa is the one who tries to help Lance stop seeing them! That's different. . . I'm not sure which ending I prefer now.
It would have been nice if they had actually filmed the alternate ending and added it into the DVD. I highly recommend the book and look forward to Sexxy Lexxy's opinion when she reads it.
Missing scenes
IF you're lucky enough to have the dvd, you will be pleasantly surprised to find there are some missing scenes including MM. Especially lovely is a closer version without the tv interference of Michael in 'the thong' chained to the wall. In that scene he actually speaks, and the camera closes in on his face...
THUD!!!!!!
Thank you Atom for that lovely bonus scene...luvs ya baby !
This is a precision operation, Leonesa, be very very careful with the package that it conceals. We wouldn't want to.........damage it. Ahem...
Missing Scenes
Okay, so how about the scene where the crew goes down do Fire and runs into Mantrid, and Xev has to re-program Kai...She takes off all his body armour and they're down to rods in his chest and the "cup"...Mantrid tells them to replace the wrong rod...but beside the point, wouldn't you have DIED to be the costumer to fit that "cup"? Jeez, did you see the look on Xev's face when she had to look below? Oh, to be those eyes!
Missing Scenes
Wow! I just realised this just said "Speaking Parts"! I thought it said "Seeing Parts"! Oopsie! Remind me not to have a few draughts before posting!
Has anyone else out there seen Speaking Parts? If so, what did you think of it and are you a fan of Atom Egoyan's other movies?
Re: Missing Scenes
It's been five or six years since I've seen Speaking Parts, and I must admit that I never really knew what to make of it. That's probably because I only have it on VHS, so I have never seen the commentary that's on the DVD and I heard it makes things a lot clearer if you watch the film with the commentary. (And no, I don't know the deleted scenes either. ) As to MM's role, I remember he said in some interview that he finds it hard to watch himself in it because it's so effeminate. I can, um, relate to that.
I don't think I have seen any other Atom Egoyan movies.
Re: Missing Scenes
The book, Speaking Parts, is also very insightful, although it doesn't mention MM very much, it's a great look into the film.
Re: Missing Scenes
MM does a great job in Speaking Parts, but the movie just feels a bit unsatisfying to me because the characters are so distancing. Any, or really all, of the characters' lives and actions could have made an interesting center for the movie, but we're kept at such arm's length from them... I know the whole point is exactly that - to point out to the viewer that s/he is a voyeur.
The movie is a fun intellectual experience and makes one confront some interesting questions, but without real emotional involvement, what is cinema? IMHO, of course.
I've only seen a couple of other Egoyan films and they are always interesting.
Re: Egoyan
mmlover, Are you an Egoyan fan? Have you seen his latest, Where the Truth Lies, with Colin Firth? I've not seen it yet and was wondering if it's any good. I've read a few favorable reviews and will see it when I can.
I recently rented ...is it Family Viewing? The one with the father recording over the son's childhood movies. It was an interesting film, but left me SO depressed. Many of the themes just really intersected with my life and family. LOL, in my earlier post, I said that movies should make the viewer feel, but after I saw this one, I wished I could take that back!
Egoyan is a very interesting director overall, although sometimes I find his films to be a bit awkward or too
self-aware. Can't really fault him for these things though, because he seems to be commenting on these experiences as well, like how unnatural we have all become in our thinking and actions. Since the Critereon Collection has come out, I've been trying to slowly work through his films I haven't seen before.
Anyway, I love movies and was just wondering if you had seen more of his. Advice about good ones would be
welcome.
Re: Egoyan
I've never seen any other of Egoyan's films. SP struck me as very artsy. If you watch it more than once, one discovers nuances to it not seen the first time around. You're right, there is no emotional involvement, not really, except for maybe Lisa's character and the only really emotional moment out of MM's character was in the end when he cracked.
Re: Egoyan
Yeah, of the Egoyan films I've seen, I'd say SP is somewhere in the middle range of "good." Interesting but not compelling. I've watched it several times now, but only because it's interesting to see the acting choices of MM.
I also like Gabrielle Rose (who plays the writer and is in lots of the director's other films) because she is so fearless. I'd love to see MM and her in another movie together. If they had a director who would let them show passion, I'm sure they would light up the screen together.
Re: Egoyan
You know who I'd like to see him act with again is Eva Habermann. They had a spark of something as Kai and the first Zev, a bit more emotion that was very hot.
Re: Egoyan
I totally agree. Xenia is good in her own way, but the heat between Eva and MM was pretty obvious. Maybe it's just because they can both pout so cutely...I dunno.
