Re
Hi cozad,
interesting what you told about good ol' Chuck ( Well, OK, Chuck could have been her father, but a very young father, I mean it wasn't like he was in his mid sixties And watching them on screen I didn't think "hey, he could be her father" Sorry about that "agnostic" word - in an online dictionary I found out it even exists in German ("agnostisch"), but I honestly don't recall I ever heard it. My dictionary isn't bad, it has 95 000 words on 1342 pages... Anyway, do you think Linda was happy she could return as Nova in "Beneath" and that she could meet all the crew again? I think it must have been great to her... honestly I find it sad she says she can only watch the first movie. Recently, someone on a German DVD board said (in a POTA thread) that he even liked the 2nd movie better as it can be watched more often once you know the story. I thought about it, I like both movies and the first at least as much as the second (if not more), but I think I agree that the 2nd is easier to watch once you know the story. I think in the 1st it's more important you don't know the story yet; OK, this is true for the 2nd, too, to a certain grade, but I think it's not that important in the 2nd... I don't know how to describe it, but somehow that's the way it seems to me. What do you think? Bye Stefan |

Re I agree with what you said... you shouldn't take every "word" exactly, but take it as good advise... ... and interesting what you told about Linda... she really seems to be a very peaceful person. Honestly, I think it's much easier for women to talk about peace and say they're against weapons and so on... I mean, I find it OK and good, but I think what women don't realize how much more difficult this is for men. I don't like guns either, but I don't blame Heston for his opinion, I somehow can understand him; and I heard he held a speech right after that Littleton incident in Littleton. Even that I can understand as I could imagine he's so annoyed by all the people who are protesting against guns. Don't get me wrong, I would rather have a world without guns, too, but I can absolutely understand that people like Heston think everyone should have the right for self-defendance. Especially for celebrities, I mean think about George Harrison, someone broke into his house and attacked him Later... Bye Stefan |

Re: Yes, I see your point about the first two "Apes" movies. That is, the first film rely's on the shock of seeing the apes for the first time and than some scenes after that the shock of seeing the Statue of Liberty and realizeing you've been on earth the whole time; that the POTA is our world in the distant future; and the shock that humanity bombed itself nearly out of existance. All of this is very powerful but after you've seen it once it's not as powerful (although the film is still exciteing even when viewed over and over). The second film doensn't rely on these shocks. Their are a few but not as powerful as the suprises in the first film; so its no less entertaining to watch it after the first veiwing. You really seem to be disapointed that Linda doens't watch the second film; doens't seem to apreciate it as much. Linda went from that second film directly into working on a TV series in which she played a Hollywood starlet. The series was "Brackens World." So Linda didn't get much rest after she made the second film. I also think that durring the second film Zanuck was forced out as studio head and so it might have been a sad time for her. But I agree with Maurice Evan's who said that he didn't see the second film as a seqeal but rather as the second act of a play (with the first film being the first) and he thought the second film had more to say (about contemperary essues such as war and peace, the arms race, deterence, and so on). But I think Linda and Heston simply saw it as just another sequel; something made for the purpose of makeing money. Heston saw the humans as window dressing; didn't thinkt they contributed to the plot; thought the story was all about the apes and their adventures. However, the film says a lot about Taylor's character (how looseing Nova finaly pushes him over the edge) and shows Nova growing and learning, and Brent struggleing to heroically take action amid all these events that are really beyond his control. Its a war story about people trying to contend with forces beyond their control. I thought the human characters were essential and the main characters of the story; not the apes and mutants. About Heston, I don't mind it when people disagree with his politics but I really get offended when people try to dehumanize him or treat him as less than human; as some kind of villain like Hitler or Stalin because of his view. And than they say all these hatefull things about him. America is the oldest democracy on the planet and while we don't always live up to our ideals one of our ideals is that "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." People are so biggoted in Hollywood. If they don't agree with your politics they won't have anything to do with you. Its a very eclectic town in my view. That's why Heston doens't get many roles these day's; because Hollywood hates his politics. What a bunch of fasists! I mean I could understand it if he was a racist or wanted to overthrow the civilized world or something but get real! And no I dont' agree with all of Heston's politics either but I will fight to defend his right as an American to hold his beleifes and not be persecuted for them. People get so sanctomounious and self rightous and smug about politics and so verbally violent if you disagree with them. Violence is not necessarily physical but is an intention to hurt or harm another. Too many people in this country try to verbally harm others because of their politics (just because they aren't a liberal or arn't a concervative or arn't Republican's or arn't Democrats). In Hestons case its not only been verbal but he's actually been denied work. I didn't like what they did to Bill Marr either. They took his show away from him. They did the same thing to Ed Asner back in the eighties because of his opposition to Reagan policies. So this stuff goes on with all political persuations and I think it un-American! -cozad |

Re >And the first film shot on location in several states whearas the second film had to shoot it all in California BTW, this N.Y. abbrevation reminds me - I once had a very good friend (probably my best friend ever) who was half American, half German, and he showed me a cup on which was written "I love N.Y.". He asked me if I knew what it meant... I asked "no idea, what does 'I love nei' mean"? Yes, you know I've read that interview, too recently. She said she was doing "Brackens World" right after "Beneath". Strangely, the ImdB lists "BW" BEFORE "Beneath"; I think that's dumb, you get the impression she was doing "BW" between "Planet" and "Beneath" That's interesting - yeah, I totally agree with Maurice Evans, the 2nd movie seemed more like another chapter. BTW, repetional lesson for today: to make - making (without "e") to lose - losing to struggle - struggling (I just thought you might be interested as you made these errors quite frequently recently). >About Heston, I don't mind it when people disagree with his politics but I really get offended when people try to dehumanize him or treat him as less than human; as some kind of villain like Hitler or Stalin because of his view You know what's funny - now that you mention that about them considering as some kind of "Hitler" or "Stalin" villain? Just this even I watched that series "King of Queens" (do you know it) - I find it very funny Doug (smiling): "Maybe he likes Charlton Heston. 'Take your stinking paws of me you damn dirty ape'" (laughing). (the guy says nothing). Doug: "Hey, you do know 'Planet of the apes', right? A good movie..." The guy: "Heston is a Nazi". OK, it only was a joke 'cause it's a comedy series, but you just mentioned it, too, that he is by many considered as some kind of "Hitler".... Anyway, apart from that, do you know "King of Queens"? I really like that series, it's very funny... Back to Heston - exactly - I totally agree with what you said - people should learn to accept he has the right for his opinion, too. >Violence is not necessarily physical but is an intention to hurt or harm another. Again agreed - I think people can be very violent by hurting one's feelings. You know, some years ago a female German police officer committed suicide as her colleagues were verballly attacking and trying to get her down all the time. And I heard recently somewhere in the U.S. (could happen anywhere else, too, I think) a woman wanted to commit suicide by jumping from a bridge, and she stopped the car traffic by standing on the bridge, and people were shouting out of their car windows: "Could you finally jump now?" To come back to Heston again, I'm sorry to hear he has gotten less roles because of his opinion. Hm, at least he got a part in "Bowling for Columbine"! Later... Bye Stefan |

some stuff and other things Hi guys, Stefan, I knew addressed that last posting to cozad, but I just couldn't help but respond you know, hope you don't mind. Yeah you can say I want to be a methode actor, cozad. It seemes that all of the good acters had leaded complicated, or difficult, or even depressing lives, those are the most remembered actors any way, I woudn't want to live a complicated life, but if that was what it would take for me to be a good and renenbered acter then so be it, that is how much I love acting. I want to aske this question, what if James Dean had lived (yeah I know what were thinking Later, -Gene |

Hi Gene and Stefan! Stefan, I don't watch King of Queens but I am familier with it. I'm a news junky-I"m usualy watching news shows at that time; or else reading (or on-line). I've cought a cupple of episodes and your right it is pretty funny. But the humor that show-about Heston-is quite toppical. Many people regard him in that light. Our society is so polerized. I could go on even more about this but I don't want to turn this into a political forum (that would really irritate Linda! So you actualy thought the scenes in the subway were filmed on location? Sorry, it was just a set. If you look as the subway receeds into the distance you can tell its, in reality, a mat-painting. It does appear to go on forever theough. But what I was refereing to was that the deseart scenes (in the first film) were filmed in Arizona, Navada, and NewMexico and such states, while in the second film they filmed all the deseart scenes in the Mauhavi (I know I"m spelling that wrong!) desert in California. So you didn't get to see all those visualy exciting and impressive mountains, crags and cliffs as you saw in the first film. Just a bit of humorous trivia: according to James Greggory (who played General Ursus: Supreme Commander of the Ape Armies) Maurice got so hot in those deseart scenes that at one point he actualy fainted. Its funny, Ursus is rideing his horse and than all of a sudden he hears a thud and looks over and finds that Dr. Zaius has fainted and fallen off his horse! Gene, I dont' think being misserable will help your acting skills. That will just make you end up in rehab or something. Remember; healthy mind, healthy body; great performance. I don't buy into that whole suffering artist scene. Jimmy Stuart was a great actor and he didn't do re-hab. Neither did Chuck Heston or James Franciscus (and Franciscus was a method actor too-just like Dean). Yea maybe if you flame out like a shooting star maybe-just maybe-you'll become a ledgend but theirs no garantees that you will. Their are lots of missierable actors out there that noones ever heard of just as their are well adjusted and content and healthy actors who have some measure of success (just don't ask me to name one! I'm not sure I could see James Dean as Norman Bates. Dean wasn't creepy enough. On the other hand he certainly knew how to play emotionaly disturbed characters so he probably could have pulled it off. But come-on Tony Perkens owned that role! cozad |

Heston being villified: what Linda thinks. Stefan-I forgot to coment on what you said about that German police woman being driven to suicide by the taunts of her co-workers and how violence can be verble. Heston has himself said that he knew what he was getting into; that he was willing to take the critism for what he believes. Martin Sheen has said a similer thing about his anti war stand (for which he has been critisized). I've exchanged an email with Linda about this in the past and she seems to fear that Heston's illness is the result of his taking the controversial political stands he's taken on guns; about his being so inflexible and makeing himself into this target for scorn and setting himself up to be shunned by the industry that he cares so much about: as she believes acting and not politics is his true passion. But because he's such a controversial figure he can't get roles very easily and she thinks this is all responcible for his illeness. Its possible. Emotional and spiritual wellbeing can effect ones phyisical well being. I get the impression that Linda thinks Heston needs to be more aware of his emotional side; needs to get in touch with his feelings. He's to abstract and theoretical on the gun essue; he needs to aproach it more from an emotional standpoint (needs to emapthise more with people who are the victoms of gun violence). Linda would like him to end his association with the NRA and go back to acting (I got the impression that she believes this is key to his recovery). I think a lot of people in the industry are so unforgiveing and so full of hatered toward's Heston at this point that it won't make a difference with them what he does but their are also a lot of people-even his critics (including Linda)-who reached out to him and are praying for him (since his alzheimers anouncement). So I don't wish to imply all of the motion picture industry wishes him ill. A recent pole was conducted which revealed Heston was the most hated actor because of his politics but on the other hand that same pole revealed him to be the most respected and admired. So I think theres a lot of ambivelent feeling toward Heston in this country. Oh, and its ironic-given what you observed on "the King of Queens" but Heston's next role is reported to be that of a Nazi war criminal. Oh well, at least he's working! -cozad |

Hi Well cozad I didn't mean in order to be a good acter you have to lead a complicated life, I ment that some people do lead complicated lifes who are great actors, I wouldn't want to lead that kind of life but I'm just saying "If that's what it takes," I don't mean like go into rehab or be on anything (which I am not). I wouldn't choose to go down a glumy path (so far that seems where my life is turning but you never know where success will land you) I want to be a Hollywood great like James Dean and Marlyn Monroe, maybe one day people will even put me in there picturs/portraits. Yeah, Anthony Perkins was brilliant as Norman Bates. I'm just saying though, think of the scene in "Phsyco" when Norman Bates is talking to Janet Liegh (sorry I don't know her characters name), and him giving that speach "We all go a little mad sometimes" I don't know if Jimmy would've done it better that Perkins but at least as good. Just because I'm addressing a measage to Stefan doesn't mean you're not welcome to respond to it. I didn't know if you were aware of that or not but had reason to believe from one of your posts that you don't read my measages to Stefan. Well, please read all my measages (be them to you or to Stefan or to anyone else) and respond to any of them you wish (that goes for you to Stefan, or anyone else who might wish to respond). Hi Rich. Hello!
Hi guys,
Well cozad, I don't read your messages to Stefan, but now I will start. And yes Jimmy really could have played Narman Bates. In a bout the first twentie minutes of "East of Eden," Dean seems to have the virtues of a stalker, he follows his mother for a long time at the beginning of the film and the mother has someone chase him away, then a little while after he spies on his brother (Richard Dovalos) and his girlfriend (Julie Harris). And "Hi" also Rich, are you one of the many peole who go on here and read our postings (cozad's, Stefan's, and I)? If so what do you think of it? (And I too want to know what your talking about.) Hi Gene! Well, I've got to watch that film. They did TV mini-series back in the seventies or eighties based on EAST OF EDEN except it delt with the whole story; with the events that occured before the James Dean character was born and than afterword. Jane Seymour played the part of the mother/bordello madam if I remember correctly. One always thinks of Jane Seymour as sweet and inocent but she was a real spit-fire in that mini-series; a true villainess; deliciously vissous. Have you checked out the official James Dean website and fanclub? They have loads of info there. I think they may even have products like photos and posters avialiable (I'll have to give it a better look sometime to make sure). I"ll try to get the URL for it sometime. -cozad |

Hi cozad! Yeah, I've already checked out that website, it's really cool. You should also check out the unofficial James dean website (made buy a diehard-James Dean fan) I found it pretty cool, I think I'll pull it up sometime. I've heard of this "East of Eden" minnie series but have not seen it and I know of Jane Seymore, I watched the beginning of another (full-length) version of "East of Eden," it seemed to also have Jane Seymore as the mother but the first few minutes seemed really stupid (maybe do to the fact that the James Dean version is a hard act to follow) I read the novel though and loved it, the novel has not have a lot of flaws, the only thing flawed is what the characters liked but it hit the bare nicessities. You should read the novel (have you read the novel) you don't have to, it's more than 700 pages long (the book size I read). In the film the mother is a real devil, she burned her own house down with her parents in them, the character was truly and simply evil, in the novel James Deans character follows her every day after he gets out of school and she notices him. Also the father goes to see her (but when Cal and Aron are just kids). And in the James Dean version the brother gets killed in the war. I'm glad that the James Dean version didn't have every detail the novel had, it got the characters right (and the mother was still evil but slightly less evil than in the novel.) Jo Van Fleet was awsome as James Deans mother in the film, the scene when Jimmy talks to her is about ten minutes long and is awsome: Cal- Why did you do it? Kate- Do what?! Cal- Shot my father. Kate- Because he tried to hold me! He tried to put me down! Nobody holds me! Jo Van Fleet won the oscar for best supporting actress that year. I think over all the film was nominated for 4 academy awards, best director: Elia Kazan; best actress: Jo Van Fleet*; best acter: James Dean (yeah!); and best picture of the year. "East of Eden" is extreamly hard to find in a local video store, you might want to go to an older video store, cozad, to rent it, one that has at least been around fro 20 years (yeah, I know, hard to find!) it's do to the fact that the film is not in print. I think in my next posting I'll post all the petitions that have to do with James dean. If your interested cozad. Happy trails! -Gene PS: Thanks anyway for the (James Dean) site. Cool, isn't it? |

Hi Gene! More off-topic. Thanks Gene, that's interesting. Your quite a film historian. No I haven't read "East of Eden" but I'll have to. Sounds exciting. I saw parts of the mini series years ago. I remember Jane Seymour made quite an impression on my father as being quite the evil one in that film (my mom and dad watched the whole thing). Aparenly she came off as a cross between a witch and a vampire. Jame Seymour told and interesting story associated with that move (since your into method acting). Aparently Reeve was going to this acting coach who emphasized "method" acting. Thus, since Reeve was playing a 'playwrite' the acting coach told him to start writing. Well, Reeve started writing notes on everything. Jane Seymour one day aproached him after shooting and asked him if he wanted to go to dinner with her. He said he wished he could but that he had to do more writing. She looked at his script and it had all these notes written on it. Jane asked him why he was writing so much and he told her about his acting coaches advise on method acting. Then Jane said to him, "But Christopher, doesn't your character have writers block?" Reeve responded, "Gee, your right! Let's have dinner!" cozad- |

Re Hi, yes cozad - King of Queens is very funny (I'd be interested to watch the English version, here it's only sent as dubbed version... but I like the German voices, I don't know how the actor's original voices sound like...). BTW, I find it astonishing you only watch news programs... I mean that is very valuable, but don't you rather like someting "easy" and to enjoy sometimes? I mean, you get so bad news every day... BTW, Bruce Willis once said (asked about the violence in his movies) he doesn't see dangerous violence in his movies, but rather in all this bad news. And he has stopped watching news as he couldn't take all the cruelty anymore. I don't say it's good to ignore all news programs, but I personally like to watch something I can enjoy and laugh about... ... on the other hand I can understand it's very interesting to see what's going on in the world all the time when having a TV turned on with CNN all the time... Regarding "Beneath": >So you actualy thought the scenes in the subway were filmed on location? Sorry, it was just a set. Anyway, I still find it disappointing... next time I watch it I think "oh well, this isn't even in New York, but somewhere in California... What - the desert scene were shot on a different location than in the first part?? That's interesting - so the desert was too "hot" for Dr. Zaius Talking of all the location, have you ever visited one of them (e.g. the deserts)? I would like so much to get there one day, it must be such a magic feeling, you would think "oh my god, I'm on the POTA" I understand what you said about Heston and what Linda told you about her opinion... yes, I could imagine that. I think when people criticise him so much he's not the guy who says "you're right, I was so wrong" (which I think wouldn't be a good reaction), but says "OK, now let's see who is stronger!". I can understand his reaction, it must be very annoying (or it probably even hurts him) when so many people are criticizing you. That's funny he indeed will play a Nazi... Yes, about replying to each other, I also thought that might be confusing - of course my messages are also for both of you, it's only that the ANSWERS are addressed to you, cozad, or you, Gene, but still everything is addressed to both of you, so it's the same in my case. I also like Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour... I know Reeve from e.g. "Superman", of course... but I think the only Seymour movie I watched was "James Bond 007 - Live and let die" (she was great in it...). BTW, I wonder who's that "Rich" guy... I'm afraid this was his first and last posting (which I couldn't see much sense in BTW)... Bye Stefan |

Hey, and... ... that's really strange that Reeve said he'd like to have dinner with Seymour, but he had writing to do... Was he shy maybe? I mean, how could he refuse such an offer? Luckily, Seymour didn't give up (I mean so that they finally had dinner together)... BTW, you know what I wondered about: This last "Nova" threat was closed as you know. It's strange that it was closed at 502 postings, 500 would have made sense, but not 502 if it was automatical. So what I suspect: Someone (maybe Mike?) is still watching the forum and my (ironic, but maybe not obviously ironic) "Damn you all to hell" thread seemed offensive and that's why it was closed. Do you think that's possible? Webmaster, if you can hear me, please let me know! Bye Stefan |

Hello. Hi guys, Thanks for the comment cozad, I still have much for to learn about the history of film, but I guess I do know a lot for my age. Your father seems like one who's very involved in film as well. Did he watch the minnie series ("East of Eden") because he also saw the James Dean version and would think it would be somewhat interesting to see the minnie series? Sorry, haven't seen "Somewhere in Time," sounds interesting though, maybe I will sameday. It seems like Reeve kind of associated with his character, and it's pretty interesting what happened on the set, any chemestry going on between the two? Yeah Stefan, that might have been "Rich"s first and last posting. I figure, if your making your first posting on here, you might want to have it make a little more sense ehhhh Yeah Stefan that is kind of funny how the thread had 502 postings rather than 500, perhaps we shouldn't use any more foul language on this site, huh?
