new members and interested please read!
Greethings wayfarer,
so you stumbled across this RPG of ours and are obviously interested in it but before actually posting an application, here some things we'd like you to know and/or consider. Please read through them carefully. Thanks!
First of all to avoid confusion, here
a short list of abbreviations we use:
- IC: In Character (playing your character so NOT being yourself as a human being who sits in front of his/her comp )
- OOC: Out Of Character (NOT your character but the real person, YOU)
- NPC: Not Personal Character (basically every character you did NOT create. NPC'able characters are those everybody can use. the permission to NPC someone gives you or the named person the right to move the character WITHOUT deciding major things regarding character development)
- TBC: To Be Continued (this can mean two things: TBC - anyone? respectively a character's name means there is the possibility for other characters [either anyone or specific ones] to go on
or
TBC - name of another place/thread means the thread is finished [sometimes only for a certain character if states, otherwise for everyone] and continues where the link after TBC leads to.
there are also special cases but they are easy to understand.)
In cases of uncertainty, just ask the one who posted! This counts for everything else you don't understand. We don't bite, honestly
Applications - your character(s):
As you can see taking a look at the appropriate sheet, there are several things to be filled out. Make you sure to write something for every of those "subjects" since those are what makes your character a round one (the actual playing aside) and helps us admins to rate the degree to which you prepared him/her as well as imagining the character as a whole and his/her possible position in the plot.
Although it is "only" a sample, we recommend to put all of what you got into the post at the end of your bio since this (and the history part which has about the same value) is what's mainly leading to either acceptance or rejection. You don't need to have a complex plot in it, it can actually be even a short scene of no importance at all since it is just for us to see your way of writing.
For the time being, you need two admins to accept your bio to start playing. We might want you to change something, re-write a passage, point at illogical parts or things that simply don't fit into the world of Gysha or similar.
Please do not take those comments as bitching!
Don't feel insulted since this is the last thing we mean to do!
Please consider what we have to remark and - if you feel we are wrong - explain why you did something the way you did it! Although we do have some experience, we aren't omniscient or the masters of RPing so of course we can get something wrong or overlook a detail.
There just one more thing you need to have in mind when creating your character: God(desse)s are boring! No one wants to play with an invincible character so don't make him/her overly powerful and add at least one weakness.
Reading through other bios or posts, you might notice there are a few characters who seem to be just what I kind of prohibited above. Of course, it is ok to let him/her be a brilliant mage, one of the best swordsmen or the fastest of them all but not all of that at once!
The strongest characters - as to yet - are controlled by the admins which is not due to our urge to play the dictators but simply because we make sure not to misuse our characters' powers which you shouldn't do as well.
Additionally, a "big bad" needs to be stronger than the rest or the showdown would be rather lame
Further information will be found in the application sheet and remember: It is common that even we as admins have to modify some things about our characters so don't worry if you have to do that as well!
The Board - your posts:
Mystic Gathering is a skilled RPG meaning we like our posts detailed and nicely done - the players should put effort in their creation so they are fun to read and encourage others to go on.
First of all and most importantly don't be intimidated by other player's posts!
We do have some brilliant players with years of experience but all of us are in a constant process of learning and improving. You can't find as great expressions, metaphors etc. as xy? So what?! No one started off being perfect (and truth be told, no one ever is!) and if you feel inferior, then try to do something against it!
Ask those you think are better for advice, ask them to look over posts you've done and to help you to improve them. No one will decline that, en contraire, it's the biggest compliment one can get!
Mind that: If your bio has been accepted, the admins think you got talent and are good enough.
However, it's only natural that there are days when creativity is low and your posts aren't as good as usual. You could either post later when you feel the result will be better but if you want to go on anyway so you're not holding up other players, it's ok as well. No one will yell at you or anything since - as said before - those days are normal.
Anyway, it is of importance that those times aside, your texts are written using all of your skills!
After your character got accepted, you - most probably - want to start playing right away.
Stop
Before you start, think about what you - roughly - want to happen. Make a small plan. It doesn't matter whether the story will develop differently or turn out to be just as you wanted it to - that depends on the other players - but you have to have something in mind, even if it's just a situation others could join in to. If you don't know exactly how to get involved in the main plot, maybe others have, so give them the chance to go on with the thread you started (if you did so)
The following questions might be helpful when you think about how and where to start:
- What are my character's motivations, intentions and goals?
- Where is s/he and does s/he want to travel somewhere?
- How can I offer the possibility for other players to join in?
- Do I want to open a new thread or rather continue one that's already in existence?
- How does the time of the day/year, the weather or other outer influences affect my character?
- What has happened before my post? Do I want to include flashbacks to explain the current situation/the character's whereabouts etc?
... and so on, I guess you got the picture
General Comments of Importance:
Don't get intimidated by the mass of places to post in!!!
Of course it can be frustrating to post somewhere and either there's none of the other characters around or no one else finds the thread because there are so many forums.
There are two ways to avoid that:
1.) don't post in the middle of nowhere with nobody else around
or
2.) post where you want to and then open a new thread in the New Threads - Participation Requests area of the Player Interaction Forum (there, you can also find a thread with all currently active IC threads).
in addition, inform yourself about the "mark forum read" respectively "mark all forums read" option! with that, you can set the board so it only shows forums/threads which are new or include new posts (on the main page, a red ball can be seen next to the forums with new posts then).
We'd like to encourage everyone to talk to other members. Post in the Player Interaction Forums to introduce yourself, find someone to plot and plan with or simply chit-chat.
Try to get an overview over the other characters. Maybe there is one or more you can imagine yours to have a certain relationship with? Hate, love, vengeance, friendship - there are so many possibilities but don't simply ask "hey, want your character and mine to be friends?" but think about what that means! Maybe talk to the player through MSN or a similar chat program to develop a common past or future plans!
It's of no problem at all to alter bios after they have been accepted as long as it does not affect parts which have already been mentioned in the story.
Just tell an admin to look over it!
If you have ideas for the mainplot, sidestories or anything else of dimensions not only concerning your personal character but those of more than one other player as well, don't hesitate to post them in the RP Talk area for open discussions or e-mail/pm an admin!
It will be highly appreciated.
Thank you for reading this and if you have any questions, post them or send pms or e-mails to an admin.
Let's have a good time together in the World of Gysha!
Matt
Life is like a stone thrown into the sea.
It creates waves, maybe changing something, maybe not, but no matter what it causes, every single wave will disappear into nowhere without the stone which lies on the bottom of the sea knowing what happened.
